O’s Notes: Drummer Rudy Royston leads a trio with bassist Yasushi Nakamura and Jon Irabagon (sax). Royston composed the bulk of the material and reaches deep to express hope and love amidst feelings of darkness and despair. Jon’s style is free spirited and he takes many up-tempo tunes to the edge of free jazz while he expresses more controlled passion on the ballads especially “Make A Smile For Me”. Royston reminds us he’s the leader with nice work on “Man O To” and “Mintaka”.
