O’s Notes: John Beasley is a masterful pianist, composer and band director with 3+ decades of experience working as a leader and supporting Miles Davis and Freddie Hubbard. He’s the conductor and arranger of Monkestra, now on their third release. This time Monk’estra Plays John Beasley featuring John’s compositions along with four Monk classics and covers of Ellington and Parker. The vibe on “Donna Lee” is slammin’ contrasting with the vocal spiritual “Come Sunday”. “Masekela” is a fitting tribute performed in a septet anchored by bassist John Patitucci and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta. They swing hard on “Five Spot” with Grégoire Maret (harmonica) in the spotlight. We love the beauty of these originals and arrangements, imparting different layers of beauty with exceptional musicians.
