O’s Notes: David Balakrishnan (violin, baritone violin), Evan Price (violin), Mads Tolling (viola) and Mark Summer (cello) address the legacy of John Coltrane with strings! This is an unusual application that really swings. There is a hint of bluegrass on “La Danse du Bonheur”. The second half of the program starting with “Round Midnight” and including “My Favorite Things” and “Naima” were best suited for strings. We also liked “Modal Trane”. The Turtle Island Quartet’s rendition of “So What” surprised us with the percussive elements capping a session that gave us a better appreciation for Coltrane’s compositions in yet another format.
