O’s Notes: Guitarist Gene Ess leads a quintet with featured vocalist Nicki Parrott. Pianist James Weidman, Gene Jackson (d) and Thomson Kneeland (b) round out the band. They swing on ten selections arranged half by Kneeland and half by Ess. Nicki’s voice is soft and sweet, complementing the music but the star of the show is Ess who plays cool melodies all the way through and along with Weidman and Kneeland on “The Old Country” for example, one of the highlights.
