O’s Notes: Darrell Katz conducts the jazz Composers Alliance Orchestra, a lush large ensemble including vocals from Rebecca Shrimpton. They restate classic jazz and blues tunes with blazing arrangements brought to life by the powerful big band. The performance is dynamic and recorded well. We enjoyed the contrasts in the paired compositions: “I Like The Sunrise”, “A Wallflower In The Amazon”, “Hoochie Coochie Man”/”All Bark & No Bite” and “Visiting My Aunties”. In each case Darryl pairs an original with his arrangement of the classic tune. The free improvisation injected into several tracks is well placed and amplifies the theme of the tune without losing the listener. Mike Finnigan adds vocals and the B3 really cooking on “Tough Luck Blues”. It is a very entertaining performance capped with “The Red Blues” performed by the JCA Sax Quartet with Shrimpton.
