O’s Notes: Jacques plays sax with inspiration from Coltrane, Joe Henderson, Nascimento, Toninho Horta and Keith Jarrett to name a few. That wide range of influence creates a rich sound that is a cool, neobop-fusion that we found very appealing. The title track started with a traditional approach featuring Elisabeth Kantomanou scatting. John Scofield’s guitar solo took it into fusion territory before the funky interaction between bassist Reggie Washington and Schwarz-Bart gave the piece its highest energy. They relaxed a bit with the subtle bossa nova of “Dio Pann”. Stephanie McKay leads the vocals with Kantomanou adding harmonized improvisation along with Jacques tenor sax on “Big Blue”, one of the best tracks. There are also a couple of remixes included for the contemporary crowd. All of the songs were composed by Schwarz-Bart who also produced the CD. He has a fresh approach that begs your attention.
