O’s Notes: Ortiz (p) leads a quartet with Peter Slavov (b), Eric McPherson (d) and either Abraham Burton or Antoine Roney on sax. Aruán wrote of the music, arranged and produced the effort as well. The music is fresh and introspective on tunes like “Slow Motion” and pops on “Gregorio’s Mood”. Ortiz varies the pace and dynamics during some selections bringing the listener into his fold. We liked the mix of the Rhodes with percussion on “Landscape if A Dry Watermelon”. It reflects the overall theme of the session with Ortiz leaning on his rich Cuban heritage as an inspiration.
