O’s Notes: Dave Liebman leads a large ensemble under the direction of Gunnar Mosblad (as, cl, fl). Liebman composed the music and is the featured soloist throughout, playing soprano sax, wooden flute and clarinet. The band consists of some of New York’s finest jazz musicians including Charles Pillow (as, oboe, fl) and Scott Reeves (tb, alto flugelhorn). The program is six meaty arrangements recorded live at University of Colorado-Denver 2005 and University of Toledo, Ohio 2007. “Anubis” has an exotic sound contrasted with the more typical “Turn It Around”, a multilayered arrangement by Geri Agmon. Our favorite was “New Breed”, a dynamic energetic tune.
