O’s Notes: Pianist David Leonhardt transforms Bach into jazz with a mild dose of blues. The music is written mostly by Bach but also includes other classical composers. Leonhardt’s approach allows retention of the classical themes before bursting into jazz space. It works very well on “Prelude in G Major” as they move from classical to cool jazz and then swinging their way back and forth. We also enjoyed “Prelude in A Minor”. Matthew Parrish (b) and Alvester Garnett (d) round out the band. We were skeptical at the outset but David and his trio pull it off, a good transformation.
