O’s Notes: Better By Far“is pianist Marc Copland’s latest endeavor. He leads a familiar quartet with trumpeter Ralph Alessi, bassist Drew Gress and Joey Baron on drums. The music is mostly original written by Copland alone and collaborating with his band on three selections. There is a good mix of ballads and burners. Baron has a strong solo on “Evidence”, the lone cover, a Monk composition. Alessi pushes the limits in a cat and mouse exchanges with Copland on “Mr. DJ” and“again on “Twister”. There are also more passive ballads like “Gone Now” and the title track leading a well-balanced session.
