O’s Notes: George Lernis is a percussionist, drummer, educator from Cyprus and now residing in the US. Between Two Worlds was inspired by the Turkish poem of the same name and the music is the outcome of Lernis’ master’s studies at Berklee. He seeks to promote a better understanding of immigrants and their cultures through his music. Here he combines Middle Eastern music with American jazz. The chants and moaning may not appeal to all listeners but there is beauty nonetheless, especially on “Zikir” including shadowing by trumpeter Emiel De Jaegher. Meg met Ali Sanlikol (p, voice, oud), Burcu Güleç (vocals) and John Patitucci (b) make strong contributions with Bruno Raberg playing bass on “Sailing Beyond”. If you open your mind to different themes and take the time to listen, you will be impressed!
