O’s Notes: Bones & Tones was born in 2009 when Lloyd Haber formed the group to perform at the Long Beach Jazz Festival. The idea was to place percussion in the forefront as opposed to their tradition role in the background. Haber plays marimba and is joined by Abdou Mboup (vocals), Jaribu Shahid (b) and Warren Smith (vibes). All of them also play various percussion instruments. There is a strong African bent to the music especially when Mboup is singing but if is far more melodic than we anticipated. Highlights are “Configuration” and “Carajillo Con Mantilla”.
