O’s Notes: Pianist Hiromi Uehara takes us in several directions on Brain, a collection of eight of her newest compositions. The opener “Ku-Fu World Champion” has a techno electronic beat. It is followed by the more mellow contemporary sounds of “If…” anchored by the solid bass line of Anthony Jackson. Tony Grey (b) and Martin Valihora (d) round out the band. Hiromi’s piano playing is excellent, especially on songs like “Desert on the Moon”, more of a bop tune. We prefer the warm tones of the acoustic instruments to the electronic instrumentation but the combination works well on “Keytalk”.
