O’s Notes: This is a collection of eight songs composed by Heiner Stadler (p) and performed during 1966-1974. The cast includes a wealth of great talent including Reggie Workman (b), Joe Farrell (sax), Jimmy Owens (t), Lenny White (d), Don Friedman (p) and Dee Dee Bridgewater singing a duet with Workman on “Love In the Middle Of the Air”. They stretch out with large doses of improvisational solos. Stadler’s compositions are more symphonic vs. the chaos that sometimes evolves out of free jazz endeavors. This is also the case on “Bea’s Flat” composed by Russ Freeman. But let there be no doubt that is Avant Garde and a treat for lovers of the genre.
