O’s Notes: Saxophonist/educator Chad Eby teams up with some fine musicians for this piano-less combo. Jason Marsalis (d), and Steve Haines (b) join him to form a core that performs the bulk of the set. It is mostly originals by Eby along with several classic covers. We were about a minute into the first track “Tip Toe” and realized that we were really into it tapping our foot and smiling. They followed with the sad tones of “Mira” before stepping up the pace on “Epitah I: Doo-Wee-Inn” (for Dewey Redman), the first of four selections dedicated to jazz legends. Doug Wamble plays guitar on “I’m Still Here” and Branford Marsalis makes a guest appearance on “Sentinel”. The overall mood of “Broken Shadows” is dark as Chad visits the memories of jazz tradition capped by a warm solo rendition of Ellington’s “The Single Pedal of A Rose” our favorite tune of the CD.
