O’s Notes: Saxophonist Jeff Antoniuk leads his band Jazz Update through an exciting set of ten songs. Wade Beach (p), Tom Baldwin (b) and Tony Martucci (d) make up the rest of the quartet which sounds like a much larger band. They play a blend of covers and originals highlighted by “Screwball” and the warm title track. They inject some playful elements into “Meet Me at the Ponderosa” and sprinkle a mild Latin seasonings on “Global Village”. This CD could just as easily be classified as neobop and will appeal to traditional jazz listeners as well as the fusion crowd. Either way it is a winner.
