O’s Notes: Weather Report co-founder, keyboardist Joe Zawinul performs with the WDR big Band for this release. They have a large sound that is transforms these classics. The rhythm section includes polished performers Alex Acuna (percussion), Victor Bailey (b) and Nathaniel Townsley (d). They play ten songs on two CDs leaving ample opportunities for solos. These opportunities are not wasted. Karolina Strassmayer (sax) is the featured soloist on a few songs notably “Procession”. This is just one example of many fine performances.
