O’s Notes: Pianist Benito Gonzalez draws influences from Kenny Garrett, Pharaoh Sanders, Jackie McLean and several others. He invites a strong cast including Christian McBride (b), Azar Lawrence (ts), Jeff “Tain” Watts (d) and Ron Blake (ts). That is great direction and good company that leads to a sizzling performance with a lot of bite. They get down to business quickly on the title track featuring Myron Walden (as, ss) and Blake. Gonzalez composed all of the music except McCoy Tyner’s “Blues On The Corner”, a solid swinger. Circles is a fine effort with lots of pop!
