O’s Notes: Dom’s string quartet is an abbreviation of his 15-piece large ensemble that recorded The Vampire’s Revenge, an eclectic 2-Disc effort (3/2). This ‘touring band’ consists of Ken Filano (b), Jason Kao Hwang (violin), Thomas Ulrich (cello) and Minasi (g). The seven compositions are all new originals generally on the darker side. No one musician stands out as the songs were written to allow full engagement and free improvisation from each of the players. You can extract different feelings by following different musicians on the same tune. The titles by the way are rarely a good indicator of the content of the songs as Minasi enjoys unusual pairings. But this is an unusual recording with many dark moments especially on “Slow Dance In The Bottomless Pit”.
