O’s Notes: No doubt Parra has a fine voice as evidenced on the title track. She places it on the ancient lyrics, poetry and songs of Sephardic Jews. Kat brings the music forward with a modern twist but the work is tough to classify. The Ladino lyrics have a hint of Spanish with some Arabic and Hebrew as well. The music has rich percussion and Latin rhythms. The prevalent mood is romance and it speaks to us loudly on “A La Nana” featuring violinist Stephanie Antoine. The combination of old and new, east and west is unique and takes some time to embrace. It works well on “Avrix Mi Galanica” with Kat scatting over Afro-Cuban rhythms. We appreciated the introduction to a new sound absorbing a piece of the old world.
