O’s Notes: Bassist Matthew Rybicki leads a fine ensemble including polished jazz veterans Michael Dease (tb), Ron Blake (sax) and Freddie Hendrix (t). They move us through eleven songs, all Rybicki compositions except the covers of “Yellow Bird” and “Secret Love”. The mood is upbeat with many cookers like “Seventh Sun” with nice work on the keys by Gerald Clayton. They play a cool vibe on “A Mean Lean”, then swing on “Big Money and the Left Side” before getting mellow on “Someday I may Be Far Away”. Driven has a wide variety of fresh jazz that is performed well.
