O’s Notes: Guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel leads a trio that is Drumfree. The lack of a timekeeper is never an issue for this team however as they glide through nine originals that are also produced by Muthspiel. Larry Grenadier plays bass with Andy Scherrer on sax. These are all first rate players and the union is better than you could imagine. The program includes fresh rhythms as on “Sunspot” sprinkled with melodic solos from Grenadier and the funky “Tribal Games”. We especially enjoyed Wolfgang and Andy playing off of each other on “Ibrahim”. They bounce along in unison on “Double Blues” and allow spots for each musician to shine throughout the set.
