O’s Notes: Edward is a younger jazz pianist that is creating a lot of positive noise on the jazz scene. He’s from Venezuela and blends a bit of Afro-Cuban rhythms into his jazz groove. He leads a quintet that includes bassist Larry Grenadier and Mark Turner on tenor sax. Both shine on the ballad “Caballo Viejo”. Simon wrote 6 of the 8 tunes and they are engaging with good phasing and a solid rhythm that gets your juices flowing; ahh, that Latin spirit! Best bets are “Colega”, “Slippin’ & Slidin'” and “Teen’s Romance”. These are strong hints of the vast potential of Simon who is already realizing it. At 25 he’s got a long runway. We are digging him now.
