O’s Notes: We first heard Gerald performing along with Grover Washington Jr. at a live concert. Veasley took his axe into the crowd bringing the stage to the people! He’s made many top contemporary jazz albums as a leader but this CD is a trip into the world of Charles Mingus. Veasley plays mostly electric bass putting his funky signature on the music and adding a couple of original tunes notably “Blues For Mingus”. Gerald invites his fellow band mates to the party as well. This is prominent on “Haitian Fight Song” with excellent work from vibraphonist Tony Miceli, drummer Harry Reed John Swana (t), Chris Farr (sax) and guest Doc Gibbs (perc). The recreation of Mingus’ work is daring and crafty. It extends Veasley into new space. We hope he continues the journey allowing us to further appreciate his talents. Crisp sound and a fresh take on a legend make this one a winner.
