O’s Notes: Puerto Rican jazz saxophonist Mario Castro is making folks stand up and listen. Estrella De Mar is the second release by his quintet featuring Tamir Shmerling (b), Josh Shpak (t), Jonathan Pinson (d), KyuMin Shim (p) plus an excellent 8-piece string section. They stimulate our pallet with original modern jazz including some classical (chamber jazz) notes. Guest artists David Sanchez (ts), Casey Benjamin (vocoder), Emily Elbert (vocals) and Dave Liebman (ss) bring additional flavors to the mix to make this a standout performance and place Castro on the must see list.
