O’s Notes: Benny works in a sextet with Joe Barbato or Kyle Aho on piano, Mike Mele (g), Todd baker (b), Barry Ries (t) and Steve Langone (d). They come out cooking on “Bernstein” one of four originals. Benny’s tone on tenor sax is rich and throaty, carrying a solid punch. He shines on “French Spice” and throughout the session. They show a soft romantic side with “Estate” and the mid tempo cover of “Sunny”. “To Life” and “The Thing To Do” really swing before they mellow out on “”Cakes” and the finale “Señor Papaya”. It’s all good!
