O’s Notes: This is Brian’s debut as a leader but we are already familiar with him from his strong showing as a member of Sean Jones Quintet. Hogans plays sax and also composed ten of the selections on this CD. His band includes pianist Aaron Goldberg and Luques Curtis (b). The music is modern jazz; a fresh take on bebop that proves jazz is not only alive but also growing! We enjoyed the syncopated vibe of “Eccentricity”, the cool mellow tones of “God’s Love” and the “Cloud Nine” suite. Tammy Scheffer adds vocalese on a few tracks notably “Peaceful Surroundings”. Hogans lives up to the title with a solid effort.
