O’s Notes: Gary’s performance of Brazilian jazz with a large ensemble brings an abundance of happiness to the stage. Songs like “Tudo Bem” (It’s all good) incorporates Latin percussion into the big band format in a unique and exciting way. The layering of the horns on “Batuki Di Bangu” is intoxicating including a muted trumpet solo from John Bailey. The sound stage is wide and deep bringing the listener into the action. The program includes a good mix of Morgan’s originals with his arrangements of Latin classics by Neto, Jobim and Pascoal to name a few. It is a first class performance.
