O’s Notes: Fluteus Maximus is a fine session of classics arranged to place the flute front and center with strong appeal to the contemporary jazz set. The one take session was produced by leader Mindy Canter (fl, B3, keys, vocals) who easily achieves her objective. Paul Smith (b) Roy Blumenfelds (s) and Denny Geyer (g, vocals) complete the band. The program has a wide variety of tunes that keeps things fresh all the way through including a couple of Canter’s originals notably “Karma”.
