O’s Notes: The title is deceptive as there are not a lot of folk songs here! This is a blend of Hebraic, African and American folk songs where Fred only conducts and arranges. The recording was originally recorded in 1958 by three different bands including notable musicians Billy Bean (p), Chico Hamilton (d), Jim Hall (g), Carson Smith (b) and Buddy Collette (reeds). As a large ensemble the sound is rather symphonic. They paint the landscape with a wide range of dynamics. They really swing on “Old Paint”. “Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child” features Hall in a rich smaller set. Some serious cooking on “Ben In The Pen So Long” with smoking solos around the horn follows it. These are the best songs of the session. It was out of the mainstream then as it is now but still a wonderful piece of work.
