O’s Notes: Guitarist Ken Hatfield was inspired by the poetic works of Langston Hughes, a man who’s voice reigned high during the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920-30s. Hatfield assembles a talented sextet to deliver his vision. Vocalist Hilary Gardner delivers soft delicate lyrics that caress the music on tunes like “Breath of a Rose”. Hans Glawischnig (b), John Hirschfield (d) and Steven Kroon (perc) form a solid rhythm section for Jamie Baum (fl) and Hatfield to dance to. They swing gently across fourteen selections highlighted by “Silent One” and “Poem to a Dead Soldier”.
