O’s Notes: From the fleeting bursts of “Free As A Bird” to the warm mellow passages of “Song To A Seagull” Sebesky has composed a wonderful collection. Giant Box is showcase for all of the musicians Sebesky has worked with and he gives them all generous solos. The large ensemble is coordinated and ready for all tasks presented. Don’s influence by the classics, particularly Brahms, shows up in these works and his adaptations to contemporary jazz are vey good. Though this CTI classic was recorded in 1973, it sill sounds fresh in 2011.
