O’s Notes: This is a piano record featuring Joe Alterman. Strong talent accompanies him with Houston Person (sax), James Cammack (b), and Herlin Riley (d) providing a sturdy foundation. We call it a piano record because of Joe’s prominence throughout the set. He sets the pace and drives the action. “Biscuits”, “Give Me The Simple Life” and “Pure Imagination” are a few examples. Person shines on “The First Night Home” and “I Guess I’ll Have To Dream The Rest” with his trademark mellow tone and the whole band grooves on “Kelly’s Blues”. There is a lot to enjoy here!
