O’s Notes: We got excited when we looked at the lineup for this CD: Mary Stallings (vocals), Ernie Watts (sax), Babatunde Lea (d), Gary Brown (b) and leader Dave Bass on piano. They captured our enthusiasm swinging hard on the opener “LeGrand”. It is packed with energy including some Latin flair on “Mi Guajira” featuring conguero Harold Muniz. Mary breathes heart and soul into “Surrender” and “I Bet You Wonder” the two vocal selections. Dave was Gone from the music scene for 20+ years developing his other life as a lawyer! He’s back with ten originals and Piazzolla’s “Libertango” one of two duets with Watts. The other, “Someday” has a spiritual feel. That feeling extends into “Carol”, a ballad before they sooth us on “Another Ending”. Bass does a fine job and we hope he is here to stay!
