O’s Notes: Roman is a Russian jazz flute and sax player, one of the best yet one that got stuck in the background for much of his career. He arrived in the US in the 1970s via Israel. This album, recorded in the 1980’s, was not released ’til now. The music is free fusion with lots of space, allowing Roman and the other musicians to express themselves fully. Kunsman leans towards more hypnotic soft passages on flute while the attack is more dramatic and powerful on alto sax. Heavy Skies is a lost treasure that will appeal to 1970-80s fusion fans.
