O’s Notes: Bassist Loren Cohen resides in New York but Chicago jazz is a part of his DNA, the place of his early life and musical development. Loren fell in love with Caribbean sound vacationing in Florida and touring with Monty Alexander. We hear those influences on Home, a collection of eight original compositions. Vibraphonist Joe Locke, drummer Donald Edwards, pianist Ryan Cohan, Yvonnick Prene (harmonica), Victor Provost (steel drums) and Samuel Torres (percussion) make strong contributions helping Cohen deliver his message. The music swings in this captivating session. Among the best songs are “Finding Center” and “The Hero’s Journey”. Cohen steps into the forefront on “The Sweetest Soul” where he uses the bow to extract deep passion leading the melody on this dedication to this father. This is a solid effort.
