O’s Notes: Satoko Fujii (p) presents her 12-piece orchestra in Berlin, January 2014. The sound stage is open and dynamic with many passages featuring solo musicians notably bassist Jan Roder and trumpeter Natauki Tamura. The brass is powerful and pushes boundaries as we’ve come to expect on Fujii’s recordings. Ichigo Ichie is a five-song album dominated by the four-part title suite. All of the music was written by Fujii and recorded live in the studio partly with a concert audience. It is one of her better sessions for fans of free jazz.
