Hawkins, Coleman
Oh!, 2008, DVD
Instrument: Saxophone

Jazz Ruler Type: Swing
Performance: 4

Score:
O’s Notes: Coleman (ts) leads several quintet configurations with Jo Jones (d), Louie Bellson (d), Benny Carter (p), Oscar Peterson (p), Teddy Wilson (p), Sir Charles Thompson (p), Jimmy Woods (b) and Harry “Sweets” Edison (t). This video contains the best excerpts from his European tours during 1962-1966. You’ll hear a mellow Hawkins on the ballads and a dazzling “Sweets” on songs like “Willow Weep For Me”. They connect on “Centerpiece” for a really cool groove. There are many strong solos from the supporting members along the way. You will enjoy this video from the man who brought the tenor sax into the mainstream in jazz. All black & white but done well with excellent close-ups.
