O’s Notes: Those who know Joan know that she is quite the comedian behind her jazz performances. She lightens up the New York jazz scene. She is also a serious jazz singer and shares the stage with some fine musicians: Jay Leonhart (b), Matt Wilson (d) and Tedd Firth (p). The music is tight and her lyrics are entertaining. “The White Girls Can’t Sing Blues Blues” and “Louisiana” are a taste of the blues. Crowe adds a couple of show tunes and some Cab Calloway whistling with the band on “Tweet, Tweet, Tweet”. Jay is encouraged to lighten up as well on “Nukular” but also wrote, “They’re Coming to Get Me”, a solid jazz ballad. Special guest Bob Dorough sings a couple of blues tunes as well. This is solid entertainment from one of the best jazz entertainers on the scene.
