O’s Notes: Todd is a non-conformist and he plays bass clarinet, an instrument that generally falls outs of the mainstream as well. Inheritance builds on the history of jazz colored by Marcus’ creative spirits with some mid-eastern flavors. This is a vibrant recording with a fierce pace on the burners and warmth on the ballads. The accompaniment comes from two rhythm sections. The first includes pianist George Colligan, Eric Wheeler on bass and drummer Warren Wolf. The second substitutes Xavier Davis (p) and Eric Kennedy (d). It gets even gets better with guest artist Don Byron adding a second clarinet on two selections, notably “Solstice”. All together this is fresh, noteworthy and a strong second CD from Marcus.
