O’s Notes: This trio consists of Aruán Ortiz (p), Francisco Mela (d) and leader, Esperanza Spaulding (b, vocals). They are performing nine compositions which are primarily originals written by Spaulding and band members with a couple of standards. They focus on creativity with these neobop/fusion tunes. Spaulding’s pitch in perfect as she voices her notes (literally) on “Mompouana” and “Perazuán” a beautiful vocalese exercise with Ortiz. She is a new face on the jazz scene at 21 but already well stated, also the youngest professor at Berklee! There is a lot of potential here, no doubt.
