O’s Notes: Geri has been busy in the studio and theater following her Guggenheim Fellowship concluding April 2009. The results are formidable as she marries traditional jazz and dance on this live set to bring us an exciting encounter. The audience at the 2009 Detroit Jazz Festival was thrilled and we also get a visual peak here with two bonus videos via PC. Tap dancer Maurice Chestnut brings his skills into the mix as a percussionist as well as a visual artist. Geri’s “Philly Joe” is one of four originals that hit the bull’s eye along with three fresh covers. Drummer Kassa Overall shines on “The Western Wall/Soul Eyes”, a lengthy reflective piece while Kenny Davis (b) anchors the action on bass. Sit back and enjoy this welcome break from the status quo.
