O’s Notes: The legendary baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams composed 42 pieces and was the leader on eighteen albums with hundreds of recordings and performances as a side man. Live at Room at the Top features Pepper in front of pianist Tommy Banks’ Trio with Bobby Cairns (b) and Tom Duran (d). It was September 25, 1972 at the Student Union, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. Admission: $1.50 and yes, all attendees got more than their money’s worth. Listening to Adams’ lengthy solos on the album illustrate his incredible passion and endurance. Those incredible runs are truly meaningful and melodic. There are 7 burning selections on two discs. Adams coaxed the best out of the band too!
