O’s Notes: These are live sessions from February 1948 in France and October 1952 in Germany capturing the legendary Louis Armstrong at his peak. While the audio quality is a reflection of the times, there’s no debate about the quality of the performance of Armstrong singing and playing his trumpet! Jack Teargarden (tb, vocals), Barney Bigard (cl) and Earl Hines (p) were a part of the band in France and Bob McCracken (cl, vocals) was in the band in Germany. Dixie jazz was still appreciated in Europe while modern jazz was gaining traction in the US. This is a reminder of the genius of Armstrong, always classic!
