O’s Notes: Dexter walks in off of the streets of Holland into the club and immediately lit it up with “A Night In Tunisia”. It doesn’t take long for us to realize his incredible composure and sense of cool even with perspiration pouring down his face. He is well spoken and at ease at the mic speaking or playing his sax. Gordon was at his peak during these 3 shows in Europe during 1963 and 1964. He starts in Holland then Switzerland and finally in Belgium. Like many jazz musicians, Dexter was unable to get a cabaret card because of past heroin arrests. Hence he was unable to perform in New York. So he moved to Copenhagen where he lived during these sessions. The music is great and there are some intense close up video shots as well. Strong liners notes make this one an excellent DVD in the 2nd Jazz Icon Series.
