O’s Notes: Roman Diaz is one the most respected elders in the form of bata drumming, an ancient form of drumming combined with vocals and chanting to speak to sacred gods. The tradition was born in Africa and transferred to Cuba where you can still hear it. Roman wrote and performed all spoken word with several vocalists contributing during the set. Roman’s protégé, producer Pedrito Martinez plays batá (Itotele) on all tracks with a few guest percussionists adding depth. Hats off to the entire band for keeping a traditional art form of expression alive and true to form.
