O’s Notes: Claire Daly made this recording in tribute to Mary Joyce, the courageous dogsledder who made the 1000-mile journey from Juneau to Fairbanks to attend the ice festival. It was a 3-month journey, truly an adventure! Daly plays baritone sax and flute. She leads the band with Steve Hudson (p), Mary Ann McSweeney (b), Napoleon Maddox (beat box) and Peter Grant (d). The music takes us through the journey with music that matched the spirit of the voyage. Among the best tunes are “Gotta Go”, “Homage To Freedom” and the playful “Tippin”. We also enjoyed the funky vocalese on “Who’s Crazy”.
