O’s Notes: MOPDtk is continuing their move into straight-ahead jazz from their eclectic punk, fusion and experimental jazz start. But old fans shouldn’t read that as a sellout because they still have lots of edgy improvisation infused Ito the set. Kevin Shea (d), Jon Irabagon (sax), Ron Stabinsky (p) and leader/writer/producer Moppa Elliott (b) follow their Miles Davis cover with Mauch Chunk and it is another winner! The title is an old coal city in Pennsylvania that was renamed to honor the legendary athlete Jim Thorpe. There was no former association between the two, only an economic windfall for Thorpe’s widow and the city. So the titles of the songs follow as cities dedicated to musicians with no probable association. This is MOPDtk!
