O’s Notes: It has been over 20 years since Don’s last big band recording and we welcome him back with this performance. The opener “Gravy” starts out innocently enough before the power of the large brass section is unleashed. Ah yes, well-managed big band power and intensity are always impressive. Leader Don Menza (ts) manages this large ensemble very well! Whether it is warm ballads like “Nina Never Knew” or some of Menza’s own burners like “T ‘n’ T”, the execution is flawless. Yes, welcome back Don!
