O’s Notes: This is a departure from what we’ve come to expect from Robin; a retro trip on the contemporary side vs. her more traditional takes in front of a large ensemble. Many of these songs all have a soul/blues feel to them as Robin is influenced by the music of Ray Charles, Etta James and Nina Simone. The balance is pop based selections from the American songbooks. McKelle mixes four originals with the covers in what feels like a trip back to the late 1960s. Standouts are “Never Make A Move Too Soon”, “Angel”, “Eleanor Rigby” and the title track. The arrangements are truly unique but retaining the character of the tunes. Robin does a fine job with this material making an enjoyable session.
